Woodcut prints

The prints start by drawing in pencil or ink directly onto the wood block to give an immediacy to the image.

The image is slowly formed by cutting and carving into the wood. Making decisions about the marks to make, what to leave to maintain the sense and create the atmosphere of the subject.

Some prints are single pressings in one colour, others are single pressings but with two or more colours rolled onto the plate at the same time.

Some prints are offset double pressings, when a base colour is printed first then overlaid by a second darker colour, the first colour purposely showing at the edges of the lines.

STILE

Two plate woodcut on Ho-Sho Japanese paper

20 x 20 cm

2026

This stile is on the wooded boundary that separates two fields - it is based on one in Barrow upon Soar where I walk my dog with my sister, but feels like so many others I have climbed over.

STILE B&W

Single pressed woodcut

20 x 20 cm

2026

The print was always destined to be two plate coloured print, but in black and white it has its own character.

LOOKING THROUGH

In Boscombe Overcliff Gardens Holm oaks grow like a screen along the top edge of the cliff. They provide shade and protection from the south-westerly winds and a frame for the sunlight and sea as you look towards the Purbecks.

BIRCH TREES AT ARNE

Single-pressed woodcut print on Sumi-e Japanese paper

Black / Burnt Sienna - 43 x 30 cm

2024

Walking in Arne RSPB nature reserve in Dorset just before Christmas on a cold grey day, the burnt sienna of the bracken stood out as the only colour in the landscape.

OAK

Single-pressed woodcut print on Sumi-e Japanese paper

Black - 20 x 20 cm

2025

This beautiful spreading oak tree is in Shelley Park in Boscombe, very close to where I live. I walk under it throughout the year, and watch as it signals the changing seasons.

GLADE

Double-pressed offset woodcut print on Sumi-e Japanese paper

Dark green / lime green - 20 x 20 cm

2025

The Wilverley Enclosure in the New Forest is a beautiful mix of evergreen and mature deciduous woodlands. In the heat of the summer it’s a beautifully cool place to walk the dog, moving in and out of the dappled shade crossing the path.

SIDELIGHT

Double pressed offset woodcut on Sumi-e Japanese paper

Cadmium yellow / Forest green and purple - 28 x 28 cm

2020

Between Boscombe Overcliff gardens and the Overcliff is a small copse of Holm oaks. In the sunshine the shadows they cast change with the time of year and the time of day - here stretching long horizontal shadows across the ground.
